All these diverse fauna & floral groups are a result of Sri Lanka’s rich habitat diversity with rainforest, dry mixed evergreen, montane, mangrove forest, coastal & pelagic waters.

The freshwater fish diversity in Sri Lanka is very rich with 50 percent are endemic to the island. Sri Lanka can be recognised as a freshwater fish hotspot being half of the freshwater fish species are categorized as threatened according to the latest red list. Amongst 91 native freshwater fish 49 species are endemic to the island. In addition another 24 species which have been introduced to boost the inland fisheries industry and accidental releases from the ornamental fish trade inhabit the inland freshwater bodies.   owl1
